The Blantyre Monument was erected in memory of Robert Walter Stewart, 11th Lord Blantyre, who accidentally shot himself in Brussels in September 1830. He had been a Major-General in the British Army and was, at one time, in charge of the 42nd Regiment during the campaigns in Portugal and Spain, under the Duke of Wellington. Lord Blantyre was also the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire. It was because of the great respect in which he was held that the gentlemen of the county that this monument was erected shortly after his death. |
