The Mansion of Drums |
|
|
The mansion of Drums, in the Parish of Erskine, occupies a commanding situation, on an eminence about one mile due south from the riverbank; and from the plateau upon which it is erected a very extensive view may be obtained of the Clyde, and of Dumbartonshire, on its northern shore. The present house was built by James King of Drums, in and though several important alterations have been made upon it, the original structure can still be easily identified. The estate of Drums belonged, at one time, to the 1Brisbane's of Bishoptoun, and was sold, subsequent to 1695, by John Brisbane of 2Bishoptoun, to John Walkinshaw of that Ilk. By the latter the lands were sold to Ferguson of Drums, whose son, Francis Ferguson, alienated the property to James King, shipmaster, in 1767. The latter made extensive improvements upon the estate, enclosing it all, and planting, according to Semple - "between fifty and sixty thousand young trees, of various kinds."By his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Hyndman, shipmaster at Port-Glasgow, he had four sons all of whom predeceased him. His cousin (German), William King, acquired the neighbouring estate of Millbank, and entailed it upon Matthew King, third son of James King of Drums; and upon the death of Matthew, in 1793 (unmarried), Millbank fell to Thomas the youngest son. The estate of Drums, however, was not entailed; and after the death of James King, in 1809, it was sold to Duncan Darroch, Esq., of Gourock and the house was inhabited for a considerable time by the late General Duncan Darroch (ob. 1847), before he succeeded to the patrimonial estate. Drums was included in the entail of the Gourock estate, and is now the property of J. C. Cunningham, Esq., Craigends. It is. at present the residence of W. T. Lithgow, Esq. 1 The Brisbane's of Bishoptoun - the Brisbane's moved to Largs and then moved to Australia. Sir Thomas Brisbane became Governor General of New South Wales. You can find the city of Brisbane in Australia.2 The Brisbane's of Bishoptoun was the source of the name Bishopton. |
