I am an ex Bisoptonian. I moved there from Rothesay in 1959, my grandfather's family owned Old Bishopton before it was the convent and our family were farmers from around that area for many generations, as you can imagine with a surname of HOUSTON. The Barr cottages on Greenock road were the cottages where the farmer workers for Old Bishopton lived and is a family name. My son's middle name is Barr.
We moved there in 1959 to a house across from the RC Church on Old Greenock Road called
"Cowal" This was before the estate was built on the north side of Greenock Road then known as the Keenie Estate after the builder, and before the new school was built. In fact Rossland and Bishopton were two separate villages then, only connected by the houses along Old Greenock Road, Population of the village was then about 430. My wife and I were married in what was Erskine Parish Church in 1971, and I see from your web-site the Rev. Alexander is still there.
Knew Eric Bryce and Stevie Irvine well, and was pleased to see them featured on your site. My regards to them both from Vancouver. I went to the John Neilson, when it was on top of the hill at the same time as people like
David Woodrow, Alan Peters who I see mentioned. We used to get the steam trains to school each day.
I found out about your site from a very good friend on Gledstane Road who wrote to us at Christmas and happened to mention that there was a Bishopton site up and running.
I will check out the site from time to time to see if my peers are there and how they are doing.
Well done on trying to pull some of the history etc of the village together. |
