A Glimpse of Bishopton History

Back to Glimpses

David Beard

My name is David Beard, I grow up in Bishopton from 1953 and left in 1966. We used to live in Lyall Cres then went to Gledstane Rd (our house was Dinard). We left in 1966, went to England then South Africa, I now live in New Zealand. My Mum (Dorothy lives in South Africa), Dad, John (Bert) died some years ago.
Your page has brought back fond (and some not so fond) memories eg waiting outside the Golf Inn for Dad.

Great work, Id love to hear news and even to contact any old friends.

Thanks for your reply.

We used to be about 3 doors from they Woodrow's, the people next to them were the Young's- Are Frank or Richard still around?
My best buddy was Willie McLellan who used to be next to the Bishopton Hotel. The local Doctor was Tubby White in old Greenock Road.
I remember Ian Park who had a farm out in old Greenock Road, did well when the Bridge went in.
My Grandad worked at the ROF and lived in a house called Greyfriers in Gledstane Road, he died in the fifties, he was Sydney Beard and my Uncle was Roland, a very well known chap (at least he was well known at the police barracks which was a significant watering hole that I spent many many hours outside!).
Once they let me in the Golf Inn and it was like being allowed in Alladin's cave for some reason- hell I thought I'd finally grown up!
I remember the night the ROF went on fire- we kids thought it was the Northern Lights. Some said England had burned down but that turned out to be a lie (worst luck!) I will try and get some photos together however as Mums in South Africa she has most of that stuff, most of my photos are family rather than places.

Kind Regards
